DuckDuckGo
This article is a stub. You can help the IndieWeb wiki by expanding it with relevant information.
DuckDuckGo is a search engine and also the name of a web browser which focuses on privacy; the search service supports a !indieweb hardcoded shortcut for searching the IndieWeb wiki, and is used for a personal site search feature by at least one IndieWeb site.
Features
Shortcut searches
DuckDuckGo has a shortcut feature called !Bang, which provides quick access to various other search services. This is especially useful when using DuckDuckGo as the default search engine of your browser, so you can use the address bar to search things.
The !indieweb Bang can be used to search this wiki.
Off Switch for Bot-Generated Summaries
DuckDuckGo has settings to disable large language model summaries and a NoAI subdomain that disables them by default. DDG advertised these options by running a poll in January 2026.
Other Features
- Shows favicon image beside URL, e.g. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=site%3Atantek.com+harry+august&atb=v37-4__&ia=web [1]
IndieWeb Examples
Examples of IndieWeb sites using DuckDuckGo search to implement a personal site search feature:
Tantek
Tantek Çelik has a search box at the top right of his site https://tantek.com/ and permalinks that submits a form directly DuckDuckGo.com to search his site using prefilled site:tantek.com in the search text input box.
DuckDuckGo Browser
DuckDuckGo has a browser for many operating systems that combines a common browser engine (Blink on most platforms, WebKit on Apple operating systems) with various privacy add ons and uses DuckDuckGo as the default search engine.
