Hidde de Vries reposted thisHidde de Vries reposted thisI really appreciate that Hidde de Vries pushes for the topic to be addressed. My personal opinion is that AI companies are parasites that have no right to be part of the web. They should pay billions to W3C and to content creators, but they just come in and pretend to own the place. They just take and give nothing. They don’t deserve a place at the table, they don’t even deserve a place at the kids table. https://lnkd.in/dbQNc3rv

Hidde de Vries shared this✏️ Open web vs AI: what can W3C do? https://lnkd.in/eCTza_pH High-level writeup of last week's W3C AC meeting breakout session, where we talked about threats to the open web and what to do about them! Thanks to Mark Nottingham Ben Werdmuller Anil Dash Julien Genestoux and others for talking/writing about this before.

Hidde de Vries shared thisToday I talked at Web You Want about five essential ingredients of a web in service of us, the people! Such a web is - sustainable, - ethical, - accessible, - fun, and, most importantly, - ours. Sorry, dear LinkedIn, I did make fun of your inability to link. I also covered polarisation, the need to slim down, and the fact that it is absolutely allowed to have fun on the web! 🖼️ Slides: https://lnkd.in/ecAAJXH7Five essential ingredients for a web that serves us allFive essential ingredients for a web that serves us all

Hidde de Vries shared this🔗 “I want your unfiltered and half-baked ideas, not Claude’s synthesized extrusions”, says Dave Rupert in his recent blog post (https://lnkd.in/ewnG2-ua) about what casual LLM usage could actually mean in the workplace beyond promise of ‘efficiency’ and ‘profit’. — I post links like this on hidde dot blog slash links too, with an RSS feed that you can subscribe to for free, outside the algorithmic timelines.I don’t want a screenshot of your Claude conversationI don’t want a screenshot of your Claude conversation

Hidde de Vries shared thisProud that we've published our first “position paper” at the W3C AB, gathering our thoughts around using LLMs in the process of creating standards in our community. There are some ways where we think it could be relatively ok, but also many others where the risk may not be worth it. If I can highlight one point: “Embrace thoughtful discussions: avoid using LLMs instead of deliberation.” One risk of having an LLM generate a reply or most of a reply in a conversation, is that you're giving that conversation less thought. And thought is _the_ thing that we as humans can uniquely bring to our work. Curious to hear people think of the paper!Hidde de Vries shared thisWhat happens when you put AI enthusiasts and AI skeptics into the same room? Well, at W3C you get conversations flowing and perspectives challenged. In this case, it has led to the W3C Advisory Board's first ever public position statement: "Use of Large Language Models in Standards Work”. The position statement reflects the AB's current thinking on using Large Language Models (LLMs) in the standards process. It lists both opportunities, like brainstorming names and gap analysis, and risks, like subtle incorrectness and second-hand burdening as well as suggesting some guardrails for when LLMs are used. Hidde de Vries, co-author, noted: ”As an AI skeptic with a philosophy background, I've often been annoyingly pedantic about various aspects of LLMs and the ways they're used. I loved working with Elena, who is much more optimistic and much more tuned into how people are using these tools, to take on the challenge of coming up with a balanced piece together.” Elena Lape, co-author, added: “Standards are meant to last. And on the Web, that matters even more — because decisions made here can affect billions of people, for years to come. Hidde and I came at this from different perspectives, and I think that helped the Advisory Board arrive at a shared view that is neither uncritically open nor reflexively skeptical.” Read more at: https://lnkd.in/ebaSp3dn #WebStandards #LLMsAdvisory Board publishes Position Statement on AI in Standards WorkAdvisory Board publishes Position Statement on AI in Standards Work

Hi there! I'm a front-end engineer / tech lead with almost 15 years of experience. I have worked on a great variety of products. From a beer ordering portal for Heineken to an online registration process for the Chamber of Commerce. <br><br>The last years I have been focusing on design systems. Which became a passion of me. Reusable multibrand accessible components are my jam. I have done that for Randstad, the Dutch Chamber of Commerce and currently I’m working on one for GrandVision (part of EssilorLuxottica). <br><br>I thrive in environments where I can shape strategy and architecture, explore exciting new tech, mentor talented developers, and build great applications as a team. I believe the best work happens in a happy, trusted environment and a good sense of humor goes a long way in creating that. When people enjoy what they do and who they do it with, amazing things happen.<br><br>Other words that describe me:<br>Travel lover, photo taker, crazy cat lady, gym bro, hiker, Chile fan, adventure seeker, best off-tune singer ever, aspiring guitarist, positive thinker, coffee addict and often shoeless. <br><br>About the dinos in the pic. I made that pic while doing a hike of 110 km through Swedish Lapland. My friends and me carried the dino suits with us all the time, just to take this epic photo :)
