Create, plan, organize & collaborate with Canvas in AI Mode

Canvas is an AI-powered collaboration tool in AI Mode that helps you work through plans, projects, and things you want to get done. You can co-create with Canvas to make a trip itinerary, plan a party, create a fitness schedule, build a website or write a cover letter. You can also use Canvas for your learning goals by generating study guides or interactive quizzes.


With Canvas in AI Mode, you can:

  • Create, save, edit, and share your projects over time.
  • Get the info you need to fill in the gaps of your plan or project.
  • Expand your ideas with new insights and learn about “unknown unknowns” to easily build up your plan.
  • Customize and refine your work by adding specific details and requests.
  • Compare your options with tailored recommendations and tables that help you pick the best ideas for your needs.
  • Ask questions about text or items in both the AI Mode response and the Canvas.
  • Undo or redo changes to the Canvas to make it entirely yours.
  • Pick up where you left off by easily resuming auto-saved Canvases from your thread history.

What you need

  • Canvas is available in English to users in the US on desktop and mobile.
  • For the best experience, enable Search history by turning on Web & App Activity.

Get started with Canvas

Important: AI responses may include mistakes. Learn about generative AI and its limitations.

  1. Go to google.com/ai on desktop.
    • You can also go to www.google.com and click AI Mode in the Search bar.
  2. In the "Ask anything" bar at the bottom of your screen, click menu, and select Canvas .
  3. After selecting Canvas, enter a prompt based on what you want Canvas to help you with - planning, creative writing, coding or quiz, study guide prompt. For example:
    • For trip planning: Plan me a summer vacation to Florida with two kids.
    • For planning: Create a bathroom remodel plan on a budget.
    • For coding projects: Build me a simple website for my cupcake business in Chicago.
    • For creative writing: Write me a cover letter for an entry level technical writing role in Atlanta.
    • For studying: Make study guide for my upcoming AP exam on chemistry.
    • For quizzes: Create a quiz to help me study for the SAT reading section.
  4. You'll find a new Canvas thread being generated with Canvas on the right hand side of your screen.
  5. At the bottom of every AI Mode response, click Share Share to share both the AI Mode response and Canvas.
  6. You can also share Canvas itself by clicking Share Share on the top of Canvas header.
  7. To send feedback, click Thumbs up or Thumbs down .

Make progress with Canvas

After reviewing Canvas content:

  • You can ask a follow-up question or more details. For example:
    • “Are there any other options that are within a one-hour driving distance?”
  • Use AI Mode to customize Canvas. For example:
    • “Add options for kid-friendly restaurants.”
  • Use AI Mode to ask questions easily on Canvas. For example:
    • Highlight text, select "Ask about this."

Tip: To return to where you left off, click AI Mode history AI mode history and then click the Canvas thread. Your previous AI Mode history and latest Canvas will be restored.

Manage your Canvas saved history

Important: Changes in Canvas are auto-saved. You can start where you left off anytime. You can undo and redo to move back and forth on Canvas versions.

  1. On your computer, go to AI Mode.
  2. On the left, click AI Mode history AI mode history.
  3. To view your saved Canvas, click the name of the thread with a Canvas icon.
  4. To undo or redo, at the top, click undo Undo or redo Redo.
    Tip: Undoing and redoing will revert both the Canvas and AI Mode response thread.
  5. To share your Canvas thread, click the three-dot menu More next to your AIM canvas history and click Share Share.
  6. To delete your Canvas thread, click the three-dot menu More next to your AIM canvas saved history and click Delete Delete.

Tip: To continue editing your Canvas, type a new prompt in the "Ask" text box at the bottom of your screen.
