Marc Fielding reposted thisMarc Fielding reposted thisDo you have a good frame of reference for how to think of continuing to run databases on-prem vs. perhaps entertain the idea of moving to a cloud and take advantage of a cloud DBaaS (like AlloyDB, Cloud SQL, etc.)? Are there use cases that really justify running databases on K8s? Is there a definitive enough guide that goes into details on how to approach these decisions? From a database standpoint in particular? Something that goes beyond the hype, beyond just the superficial argument of "if you have 50 mil burning your pocket for the upfront investment commitment, sure, stay on-prem, otherwise paying monthly fee to a cloud provider is just a no-brainer decision"? Here's one humble attempt at an analysis on how to approach these questions. It's not short, it builds the argument slow, deliberate, but I hope it's comprehensive enough to be actually useful. Indeed, this is a simple problem that's surprisingly difficult to get right. And unless the get/set is atomic, there's an inherent race condition. For example, file I/O can hang (hello NFS!), and multiple copies of a script queue up. When the I/O condition is resolved, they all check and create a lockfile at the same time, and proceed to run simultaneously. It's a BASH FAQ (http://mywiki.wooledge.org/BashFAQ/045) with a few safer suggestions.

Marc Fielding liked thisMarc Fielding liked thisOn April 3, 2006, I walked through the double doors of 1440 Broadway for my very first day at Google. I was starting as a Windows Sysadmin. Back then, new employee orientation was a brief half-day affair before you were essentially released into the wild to go find your team. I’ll never forget Jeff Rebeiro rolling up to grab me on a Razor scooter. He led me straight to an IT supply closet, pointed at the shelves, and told me to just pick out whichever laptop and desk accessories I wanted. It was a completely different era. The 20 years since that morning have felt like a blur. It’s hard to wrap my head around the sheer scale of the exponential growth the company has experienced since those closet-picking days. We’ve been through it all from the earliest concepts of cloud computing to the trenches of Operation Aurora and other high-stakes security incidents (IYKYK) to the current AI era. These were the moments that tested us, but they were also the moments that bonded us and we rose to the occasion. The folks I’ve worked with along the way are some of the kindest, most genuinely caring people I’ve ever encountered. And that’s not even mentioning the fact that they are the absolute best in their respective fields. Getting to learn from, build with, and troubleshoot alongside this caliber of talent for two decades has been the privilege of a career. Here’s to 20 years, the incredible people who made it memorable, and the journey ahead.
