Overview and Live Results: Rhode Island State Senate Special Primary

July is usually one of the slower months for special elections and that is the case again this year.

The most interesting contest is next week's primary in Arizona's 7th congressional district, which became vacant with the death of Rep. Raúl Grijalva in March. It is a deep blue district, so the winner of the Democratic primary is highly likely to be the next representative.

There's just one election we're following this Tuesday. It is a primary for the one open seat in the Rhode Island State Senate.

Rhode Island Senate District 4 (Primary)

The Rhode Island Senate is is one of the more Democratic legislative chambers in the country; The party holds a 33-4 supermajority over Republicans. Members serve two-year terms; the next regular elections are in 2026.

District 4 encompasses parts of Providence and North Providence. Democrat Dominick Ruggerio, who served in the Senate for over 40 years, died in April. While occasionally drawing a primary challenge, Ruggerio had not faced a general election opponent since 2012.

Four Democrats are looking to succeed Ruggerio. The district's Democratic Committee has endorsed North Providence City Councilman Stefano Famiglietti.

The winner will meet Republican Alexander Asermely in the August 5 special general election.

Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.
